Estimation of the Earth’s Internal Structure Based on Seismic Wave Observations

It is extremely difficult to directly observe the Earth’s interior.

The depth that humans can reach is very limited compared with the Earth’s radius of about 6,400 km, and it is not realistic to directly sample and investigate the mantle or core.

However, we know that the Earth’s interior has a layered structure consisting of the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.

Seismic wave observations have made this possible.

This paper focuses on the properties and propagation characteristics of P-waves and S-waves and explains how the layered structure of the Earth’s interior and the state of each layer are estimated.

Seismic waves mainly consist of P-waves and S-waves.

P-waves are longitudinal waves and oscillate in the same direction as their propagation.

P-waves can propagate through solids, liquids, and gases, and their velocity is relatively high.

On the other hand, S-waves are transverse waves and oscillate perpendicularly to their propagation direction.

S-waves propagate only through solids and do not travel through liquids or gases.

In addition, S-waves are generally slower than P-waves.

This difference in properties plays a decisive role in estimating the state of the Earth’s interior.

That is, regions where S-waves are observed are likely to be solid, whereas regions where S-waves disappear are likely to be liquid.

Furthermore, changes in P-wave velocity reflect boundaries involving density, elastic modulus, and changes in state.

The velocity of seismic waves is not uniform with depth and changes abruptly at certain depths.

Such a surface where velocity changes abruptly is called a discontinuity and is considered to be a boundary where the type or state of material changes.

Several important discontinuities exist within the Earth’s interior.

First, the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho, is located at a relatively shallow depth.

At the Moho, P-wave velocity increases sharply from about 6–7 km/s to about 8 km/s.

The layer shallower than this surface is the crust, and the deeper layer is the mantle.

The crust is a thin layer including the Earth’s surface, and the mantle occupies most of the Earth’s volume.

The existence of the Moho indicates that the crust and mantle are composed of different materials.

Next, the Gutenberg discontinuity lies at a depth of about 2,900 km.

This is the boundary between the mantle and the outer core.

S-waves disappear at this surface.

Since S-waves cannot propagate through liquids, this strongly suggests that the outer core is liquid.

In fact, because S-waves travel through the mantle, the mantle is considered to be solid.

On the other hand, P-wave velocity decreases sharply in the outer core.

Because liquids have almost zero rigidity compared with solids, P-waves travel more slowly through liquids than through solids.

This also provides evidence that the outer core is liquid.

At a greater depth of about 5,150 km lies the Lehmann discontinuity.

This is the boundary between the outer core and the inner core.

P-wave velocity decreases in the outer core but increases again upon entering the inner core.

If the inner core were liquid like the outer core, P-wave velocity should not increase again.

However, because the velocity actually increases, the inner core is considered to be solid.

In addition, the inner core is under extremely high pressure of about 3.6 million atmospheres, and because the melting point rises with increasing pressure, it is thought to remain solid even at high temperatures.

From the above observational facts, the Earth’s internal structure is estimated as follows.

The crust and mantle are solid, the outer core is liquid, and the inner core is solid.

This estimation is supported by objective data such as changes in seismic wave velocity, especially the disappearance of S-waves and the re-increase in P-wave velocity.

Even for objects that cannot be directly observed, their internal structure and state can be inferred with high confidence by using seismic waves as a physical means
